Our History
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland started in 1993 when a group of interested individuals began looking for a way to bring affordable housing to lower income families in Garland. A year later, they were certified as a Habitat for Humanity affiliate and began work in earnest. Beginning with a $1.5 million grant, coordinated through the City of Garland and the Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere (HOPE3) program, they purchased and rehabbed forty pre-existing homes. The initial selection committee identified twelve qualified families and immediately set out to find and rehab homes for them - a process which eventually took two years. |

St. Joseph's Catholic Church became an early financial partner, providing both finances and volunteers. Steve Puckett, who later became the first HFHGG president, provided management based on his previous Habitat for Humanity experience and Vernon Showers provided initial construction management.
Today, HFHGG has rehabbed forty-six homes and built eighteen new homes. Nineteen of those new homes were built from the ground up by HFHGG core team members and local volunteers. In addition, the GISD Building Trades class has built five homes, which were moved to open lots, and finished out by Habitat for Humanity volunteers. We enjoy a close working relationship with the City of Garland and the Garland Independent School District as well as a number of dedicated financial partners.
Our Mission
To love God and neighbor by working to eliminate poverty housing in the Greater Garland area, and worldwide through Habitat for Humanity International, by building and renovating decent, affordable homes for hard-working, low-income families where they can live and grow into all that God intends.
What we do:
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland brings volunteers and resources together with families in need to build simple, decent, affordable homes within the City of Garland. Habitat homes are sold at no profit and mortgaged through zero-interest loans.
We build and/or renovate 3-5 homes each year. The types of homes are:
- New construction on vacant lots
- Completion of "School Houses" started by Building Trades at Naaman Forest High School
- Renovation of existing Habitat homes for new Habitat families
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available for public review. If you want to review these documents, please come to our office at 1110 Main Street, Garland, Texas 75040.
