Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland George Human, President Gale Dunn, Vice President John Jones, Treasurer Jenny Pollard, Secretary Jim Campbell Hector Cardenas Mary Cardenas Pete Hataluk Pete Hataluk Bill Hill Joan Jagielski John Jagielski Javier Ramirez Ralph Sivley Board of Directors 2003 Love Thy Neighbor March 2003 Volume IV DK Witt has been donating either labor and/or labor and roofing materials for at least one home each year Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland has been in operation. Habitat has been servicing Garland since 1993. This year, DK has offered to install the roofs on three homes currently under construction and his “fishing buddy” will donate the materials. Why does he do it? He says it's a good charity. Habitat isn't the only recipient of DK's generosity. He is currently helping a young man through college and realizing his dream of becoming a teacher. There are several people that have been the recipient of DK's generosity. He calls himself “the richest man in the ghetto”. His riches come from more than money …. They come from all of the people he has helped in his lifetime and has asked for nothing in return. When asked about what he would tell a young person today, he said, “maintain your credit and always be honest. If someone comes to you for help, give it with a smile and ask for nothing in return because one day it will come back to you.” DK Witt Habitat for Humanity's Special Angel Page # Love Thy Neighbor Thank you People Helping People Page # P.O. Ralph has been a volunteer most of his life. He began his career with Habitat when it started in 1993 and is a current Board Member. Specialty? Helping people and spreading good will. Seldom will you see Ralph when he isn't smiling. “Can Do” Dean Van Horn, age 77. Dean can do just about anything that needs to be done on a construction site. He is truly a wizard when it comes to putting things together. Jim Campbell, age 66, is Habitat's permit expert, site acquisition lead person and Board Member. If you ever wanted to know about how to get a permit and exactly what you need, all you have to do is ask Jim. He has learned everything he knows by trial and error and there were lots of trials. Golf Tournament May 12th, 2003 In 1977 several desperate and determined parents identified an urgent need for day care and recreational services for their children and young adults with special needs. The Achievement Center's purpose is to bolster participants self-esteem by challenging them to new heights of achievement. Today, ACT is the only licensed nonprofit day care center in the Dallas metroplex specializing in providing day care services to children and young adults with special needs. ACT provides full day care services, as well as before and after school and summer camp programs. During the school year, ACT interacts with public school teachers and administrators in an effort to reinforce skills learned in the classroom. The summer program provides opportunities for all students to enjoy life in the community. Activities include weekly bowling and swimming, skating, movies and restaurants. They visit the Science Place, The Fort Worth Zoo, Omni Theater, Arboretum, Discovery Zone, Kid's Town, play Putt-Putt and enjoy pizza and games at Chuck E Cheese. In addition to off-campus activities, students participate in cultural events and enjoy visitors who share knowledge and entertain the students at the Center. ACT's Parent Information Service provides on-going information and support to parents regarding issues of guardianship, behavior intervention, rights, outcome based performance and person-center planning as well as how to use the ARD meeting as a tool in building their child's success. One benefit of using your newsletter as a promotional tool is that you can reuse content from other marketing materials, such as press releases, market studies, and reports. While your main goal of distributing a newsletter might be to sell your product or service, the key to a successful newsletter is making it useful to your readers. A great way to add useful content to your newsletter is to develop and write your own articles, or include a calendar of upcoming events or a special offer that promotes a new product. You can also research articles or find “filler” articles by accessing the World Wide Web. You can write about a variety of topics but try to keep your articles short. Much of the content you put in your newsletter can also be used for your Web site. Microsoft Publisher offers a simple way to convert your newsletter to a Web publication. So, when you're finished writing your newsletter, convert it to a Web site and post it. This story can fit 75-125 words. Selecting pictures or graphics is an important part of adding content to your newsletter. Think about your article and ask yourself if the picture supports or enhances the message you're trying to convey. Avoid selecting images that appear to be out of context. Microsoft Publisher includes thousands of clip art images from which you can choose and import into your newsletter. There are also several tools you can use to draw shapes and symbols. Once you have chosen an image, place it close to the article. Be sure to place the caption of the image near the image. This story can fit 100-150 words. The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually endless. You can include stories that focus on current technologies or innovations in your field. You may also want to note business or economic trends, or make predictions for your customers or clients. If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment upon new procedures or improvements to the business. Sales figures or earnings will show how your business is growing. Some newsletters include a column that is updated every issue, for instance, an advice column, a book review, a letter from the president, or an editorial. You can also profile new employees or top customers or vendors. George Human is one the “young'uns at age 65. Not only does he work on site but he is also Habitat's Board President. (We're aging him fast!) George works with the City of Garland in obtaining Home Grants and making sure we keep on track. George just thought he retired last year. Vernon Showers is also another one of the “young'uns” at age 65. Vernon, along with his crew, is responsible for supervising construction of all our Habitat homes. You might say he is our “construction guru” and puts those houses together like they were puzzle pieces that all fit together perfectly. The only picture I have of Pete Hataluk, age 73, is on the golf course enjoying a hamburger from Outback Steakhouse. I believe he liked it! Pete's expertise is cabinetry and home renovation. He can move mountains with his unusual strength and agility. He used to move office furniture in a past life. Join us at a building site and meet some of these volunteers. These are men and women who truly believe in Habitat's philosophy of “people helping people”. NOTE: Wives have been known to send their husbands to a Habitat site to learn from these people. Why? Family Information Day Saturday, February 22, 2003 and reviews the household budget to ensure that the family will be able to not only own a home but to keep it as well. Once this review has been done, letters go out to families who have not qualified this year and appointments are made for home visits for families who have made it through the first steps. Reports are then compiled and reviewed by the committee. This is a difficult job as they have to decide who gets a home based on the most need. Once this step has been completed, a presentation is made to the Board of Directors and the final decision made. This year only three homes will be available due to a decrease in funding. This year many of our volunteers were current Habitat homeowners. Who better to answer questions about Habitat. The Habitat homeowner volunteers were: Carmen Lemus, Carol Pittman, Hilda Escolero, Javier Ramirez, Larrymi Mathis, Medit Navarro, Veronique Keeton, Sylvia Sauceda and Elizabeth Compean, daughters of current homeowner, Guadalupe Compean. Habitat Board Members joining this group were: Gale Dunn, Hector and Mary Cardenas, Jennie Pollard, and Joan Jsgielski (Family Selection Chairperson) . Two other volunteers who answered our “call to action” from the Website were Sharon Tavener and Mannie Jackson. Not only did Mannie do a great job of assisting our potential homeowners with the instruction package, he also assisted as “traffic director” before the meeting. A special thanks to all of these wonderful people. Proctor & Gamble, manufacturer of Bounce fabric softener sheets, is launching a national campaign to help support Habitat for Humanity International. You can simply log on to Bounce's Website, www.thebouncehouse.com and submit your favorite way to use the fresh scent of Bounce around the home. For each suggestion, Bounce will donate $1 to HFHI, up to $100,000. Approximately 100 families gathered at the New Life First Baptist Church in Garland to learn about Habitat for Humanity and how to apply for a Habitat home. Armed with instructions and an application package, families left the church filled with hope and anticipation of securing a Habitat home. Deadline for application packages is March 14th. When packages are received at the Habitat office they are signed in and processed for the Family Selection Committee to review. This committee checks for accuracy, references, performs credit checks Family Information Day Continued Current Habitat Projects It's a first for Habitat Garland - we are building three homes side by side. 501, 505 and 509 Hopkins Avenue.
